Lugger Kipps Cup Series*

26th March 2023, from 13:00

Proposal for Kipps' Cup Racing (Sundays 12th and the 26th March 2023)

1. Races to be run on two separate Sundays max 3 races on each day. NO DISCARDS.

2. Winner will be the person with the MOST points at the end of the two days

3. For each race, points will be awarded in reverse to normal racing

a. First = number of boats starting the race, second = number of boats minus 1 etc Last = 1

point

b. Any boat not finishing, retiring for any reason, or unable to start a particular race but has

competed in at least one race of the day will be given zero points

c. Any boat not competing at all on any day will be given minus 1 point for the day

4. At the end of the second day of racing, there will be an opportunity to add up to five further bonus

points to a boat's total score from a knot tying competition against the clock. They will each have to

tie 5 different knots, with a maximum time of 60 seconds. The fastest competitor, who ties 5

correctly, will get 5 bonus points, the second four points etc. Points will be awarded in order of the

correct number of knots tied considered first, then the time taken to do so considered second.

5. On each day, there will be one "Out and Back" race, one normal race and one "Le Mans Start" race

time and weather permitting.

a. For the "Out & Back" race, there will be a normal 5 minute gun and countdown with a

normal start line. The race will consist of 5 outward marks creating a zig zag course. They will

be rounded in an alternating direction Starboard, Port, Starboard, Port, Starboard (or port,

starboard, port, starboard, port the direction will be decided by RO on the day) and then

one final mark on the opposite side of the line before finishing, by crossing the normal line,

in the direction of the start. At some point during the race (before the first boat reaches

mark 5) there will be a sound signal from the club and the safety boat and a flag will be

raised by each to alert the boats. Each boat then has a choice:

i. Either, immediately turn round and head for the line and Mark 6 beyond it, go round

Mark 6 and then back to the line to finish.

ii. Or, round the next mark in the zig zag series before turning round and going for

Mark 6 and finishing, as described in i

iii. Bonus points are awarded for each mark gone round in the zig zag progression, 1 for

the first mark, 2 for the second etc, up to 5 however, those who go round less

marks, may cross the line earlier, so get more points that way.you have a

choice/gamble whether to take option i or ii

b. The "Normal" race will consist of a course set by the race officer on the day, with a normal 5

minute gun and countdown and line start and finish. However, points will be awarded in

reverse order (as described in 3.)

c. The "Le Mans Start" will have a course set by the race officer, but no countdown or line to

start. Boats will be moored up on the pontoon and sailors will be assembled by the flagpole,

given a verbal warning "Under starter's orders" and a sound signal to "Go", will be given at

any time in the following 5 minutes, at which point they can then go to the pontoon (but

not before "go"), board their boat, cast off and sail the course. The finish will be as normal,

but points awarded in reverse as point 3.

6. At the end of the second day's racing, the knot tying race will be run for additional points. This will

be run, even if there has been no opportunity to race that day, so important for sailors to be there!

Be in it to win it!! The overall winner will be the sailor with the most points for the two Sundays. No

discards allowed. In the event of a tie on points, there will be a further knot tying task and the

fastest competitor will be the winner. Also, in Dick's words"A smile to be worn at all times!!"

Note : Kipp's Cup is a fun race so will not be included in the Annual Handicap Trophy
