MOORING SPECIFICATION

This specification represents the minimum requirements of the FSMBC but may be required to be upgraded depending upon vessel characteristics and mooring location.
It is incumbent upon the mooring holder to ensure that the mooring is suitable for his particular boat.

COMPONENTS

SINKER

A block composed of fully cured concrete with an upper surface area not less than 4 sq.ft. and weighing more than 7cwt. Metal attachment point of diameter greater than 1” securely embedded in the concrete.

RISER

Welded link chain prepared from round iron bar, greater than 5/8” in diameter.
Minimum length 2 metres. and connected to the sinker attachment point with Galvanised steel shackles with a pin diameter in excess of 5/8”.

MOORING LINES

Fabricated from nylon laid rope of diameter greater than 14mm. Attachment eyes to be spliced and fitted with nylon thimbles for attachment to the riser with steel galvanised steel shackles of pin diameter of 5/8” or greater. Loop spliced at upper end for attachment to the vessel. Minimum of 5 tucks in the splice. Eye to be sized to provide a snug fit over mooring cleats whilst still being easily detachable. Chafe protection to be added if wear is considered problematical. Mooring line length to be determined by the spacing of the sinkers as laid but sufficient so as to avoid their displacement by taking account of equinoctial spring tides, low atmospheric pressure and adverse wind conditions. Twin hulled boats or those with excessively wide beam and no central attachment point to have a divided or double mooring lines.

BRIDLE LINE

Prepared from non-floating line of diameter not less than 8mm and of a length exceeding the LOA of the vessel. The bridle line should be spliced to the upper mooring line eyes but should be detachable at some point to aid departure from the mooring.

MOORING BUOY

A light or bright coloured plastic buoy with a pick-up handle of sufficient buoyancy to support the bridle line. Buoy to be marked with the allocated mooring number.

INSTALLATION

Sinkers to be provided by the club and installed by FSMBC approved personnel at positions defined by the Mooring Master.
Sinkers to be buried so that their upper surface is more than 4” below the surface of the creek bed.
